With the power supply disconnected from the computer and switched off, connect the green lead in the motherboard plug to any black. I use a bent paper clip for this.

Now connect one drive to provide a load for the power supply, and switch it on. If the power supply is OK, everything connected will run.

Is there a way I can test an old power supply with a multimeter to make sure it's working properly before plugging it into a motherboard?
