I recently moved into an older house with insufficient electrical wiring. My recommendation is to get a book on basic electrical wiring for your house. You should be able to find something on Amazon or at your local hardware store / Home Depot. I've been reading Better Homes and Gardens Step-by-Step wiring as a primer and have found it interesting, enlightening and useful.

A book such as this should help you decide which wiring jobs you can do yourself (you might be suprised) and which you need to let an electrician perform. It will also help you to make informed decisions on laying out the electrical system for your whole house as well as the computer room.

Good Luck,
