I'm stumped.  Try as I might, I cannot get a Gateway 2000 P5-60 computer
to recognize ATA-2 drives.  WD drives marked as "AT-Compatible" are
recognized (less than one GB), however, WD drives marked as Ultra-IDE or
EIDE lock up the computer.  Can't even get into setup if an ATA-2 drive
is hooked up (I've tried 4.3 and 6.4GB drives).  Even tried a SIIG Fast
EIDE Controller CCA.  Works great w/ the "AT-Compatible" drives but same
problem occurs w/ the EIDE drives.

The BIOS does appear to have a 500MB limit on it.  It'll recognize a
800MB drive in setup but when I run fdisk only ~500MB shows up.  The
SIIG controller cures this one w/o having to use a DDO.  It should
recognize up to 8GB.

I don't know if the "DMA Transfer" or the "IDE Multiple Sector" modes
(in the Advanced BIOS setup) would have anything to do w/ it or not.
I've tried various settings w/ these as well w/ no luck.   Gateway's
site does mention the use of EIDE controllers but I was unable to find
any specs, etc. on this particular computer.

I sure would be *very greatful* if you all could help me with this
puzzler.
