Modem, XP, and pulse line

Trying to set up a new dial connection in a Compaq 530 new PC, the only
modem I had is a Multitech M2834BL. The modem installed as a standard 28800
modem and the Windows XP home diagnostic shows it is working OK.
The phone line in that place is still managed by pulse, not tone. So I
configured it that way, however when dialing you can hear the modem is
trying to dial by tones, not pulses.
Of course there is an error because the line doesnt support tone dialing.
¿ any advice?
