  I've seen several recent reports of "PPPoE works directly
connected, but not through a router".

  Ethernet LANs are typically used with an MTU (Maximum Transmission
Unit) size of 1500 bytes.  PPPoE needs about 10 bytes of overhead;
when this is added by the router, the packets are too big to be
accepted by the DSL service.
  Exactly where and how to set the MTU varies from one Windows OS to
the next, but try knocking it down to about 1480, and it will
probably start working if this is the issue.
