On a related matter, I got a call yesterday from a friend whose
system (Micron P200MMX) suddenly gave a "cannot write to disk"
error and locked up. The reset switch had no effect.

What surprised me was that the power switch could not turn off
the system. He had to turn off a line conditioner in order to reboot
it.

On restart the hard disk LED remained on (no flickering, just
constantly on). He attempted to reinstall windows 98, wiping the
disk clean (FDISK and Format).
FDISK said "no hard disks found"

He mentioned that he applied a BIOS update a few days ago
(which was without incident).

I'm curious as to why the power switch is suddenly inoperable ?
