My suggestion would be to take the battery out if you don't need to use it too often, and run the machine on the mains.  Obviously, the more often you use a laptop battery, the quicker it'll wear out, and they're not cheap.

But if that prospect doesn't worry you, just leave it in and run the laptop on mains power whenever possible.
