I don't know who gave you that information, but it is highly misleading.  The
ONLY thing I can think of to watch out for is a 56K modem called a "Winmodem".
Not that they are faulty, it's just that they rely on the CPU for their
processing power and can drain resources a bit more than a "regular" modem.  I
have a Winmodem and am using it right now on a Pentium machine so it will
work.  If I had it to do all over again, I would opt to buy a non-Winmodem 56k
modem for several reasons.

1.  Winmodems will ONLY work in Windows (not in DOS, Linux or any other OS).
2.  Non-Winmodems will NOT use the CPU as I stated above.
3.  Winmodems can be buggy as far as connecting at 56k.

The only drawback is that the regular modems are usually a bit more expensive.
Worth it though for the above reasons.

Personally, I'd recommend a 3COM/USR Sportster 56K modem.
