It will probably be necessary to disable the on-board Network Interface.
As I understand it, the bridge is necessary to utilize both the NIC and
the built-in networking. In my computer, I have two NICs and I have disabled
the on-board networking. The reason for the two NICs is first of all, failure
to read everything on the box the m'board came in, and second, to have
identical NICs to simplify configuration. The computer acts as the Internet
Gateway. One NIC plugs into the cable modem; the other goes to the switch,
providing Internet connectivity to the other machines on my network. On one
occasion when the bridge did NOT appear in my networking configuration,
Internet access and sharing was impaired. I suspect the inability to ping
other computers on the network is related to some other configuration
issue, like client configuration, computer name conflict, file sharing
not correctly configured, etc.
