The original PC had a second round connector, next to the keyboard
connector, for an external cassette recorder; you could buy the machine with
16K of RAM and no disk drives, and run it using the ROM BASIC.
IBM figured out, though, that the people who were buying this configuration
were hobbyists who knew where they could buy 48K of RAM and one or two floppy
drives for a lot less than the IBM price. By the time the XT came out, the
cassette port was gone.

Your best bet these days is probaly to connect a suitable output from your
stereo tape deck into the "line in" connector of your sound card. [Note that
hi-fi is not my native technology, and so whether some particular
configuration calls for using the "line in" or "microphone" input is not
something I'm qualified to render an opinion on.]
That is, there's no special tape deck for computer used that I know of, but
your sound card is designed to accept certain kinds of input from home audio
components.
