Imran,
Since I haven't seen any replies to your question, I will try to help.
Firstly, Winxp does not have dos, it has a command line, while not dos it
does have some backwards compatibility.
Also scandisk is no longer used, we are now back to the chkdsk function.
In order to run from a command line you have to run cmd.exe.
For your request;
Start/run/type in cmd ,hit enter
Enter chkdsk drive letter for a read only test, or with switch /f for
fixing errors and/or switch /r to repair bad sectors.

Example chkdsk C: /f /r

Now the bad news, chkdsk will not run if there is any file open on the
drive,
You will receive a message allowing it to run on the next boot.
Frankly I prefer to just run it from My Computer.
HTH.

Subject: [PCBUILD] scandisk on XP

Hi,
I have a PC intell PII 350 MHZ having a platform of
win98 and I can run scandisk by going to Dos Prompt.
Pls tell me how to run scandisk on PIV 1.7Ghz with
windows XP SP2 by following the same procedure as I
use to do in PII.
Pls note that I would like to see the same screen of
scandisk as we generally see while performing scandisk
on DOS Prompt.
Regards
Imran
