what is a disk overlay program

i am having the same problem but
w/trying to re-install win95

Some earlier computers motherboards system bios couldn't  set up newer and
larger drives correctly, so to get around the problem many disk
manufacturers sent a software disk with the new hard drive that enabled the
hard drive to be fully accessible. (Of course this gives you one extra
place for a problem to come up). 

To get away from having to use a disk overlay one could usually fix it with
a BIOS upgrade to the motherboard.

If you don't have the diskette … just go to a search engine (Like
www.dogpile.com) and put a couple words in the search like DISK Overlay. It
will come up with locations for you to be able to download the software.

Further Explanation: 
Depending on the system or  ATA/IDE host bus adapter's capabilities, Disk
Manager would load a Dynamic Drive Overlay on the hard drive.  The Dynamic
Drive Overlay will, as the computer boots, display an approximately one
inch tall blue banner  across your screen. The Dynamic Drive Overlay is
commonly referred to as the DDO

 When the hard drive boots up, the DDO is loaded into memory, giving access
to the hard drive. If the system is  booted with a diskette in the a:
drive, the DDO does not load and the hard drive will not be accessible.
FDISK  will see it as a Non-DOS partition. That is normal operation for the
DDO.


 To remove Disk Manager perform the following steps:

 1. Bring up Disk Manager (from a floppy diskette).
 2. Go into Advanced Options. 
 3. Choose Maintenance Options. 
 4. Choose the Dynamic Drive Overlay Option. 
 5. Choose to Remove the Dynamic Drive Overlay.
