Hi Bob,

This type of RAM information is not generally available in Windows. Windows
is primarily concerned with the amount and how it's used. The first place to
look is in the computer manual or a specification sheet if one is provided
separately. It that's not available and you have Internet access, try the
computer manufacturer's Web site and check the Support section for the
specifications of your particular model. Then, you can always open the case,
or remove the cover, and physically inspect the installed memory. A data
label of some description should be attached identifying it by type and
amount. The specification data should also include the maximum amount that
can be installed.

Removing the CMOS battery is not necessary or recommended. Doing so will
cause any custom settings in the BIOS to be lost. Also, anytime you are
working inside the case, insure you are grounded. Grounding straps are
available for this purpose but touching the case while working is usually
sufficient.

Subject: [PCBUILD] Adding ram to a Laptop

I'm going out now to buy a pair of RAM cards for my wifes HP laptop, it's an
HP Pavillion ZE 4300, with an Athlon processor, and the XP os. I tried to
find out what type of memory cards to buy, but I'm not as familiar with XP
as I am with W98se. As I searched through the system hardware profiles, I
was not able to find out what type memory was in the machine, and ended up
calling HP support with my model and serial # info, and after a long battle
with broken english, I found that it has a single PC2100 266mhz 200 pin
256mb card in one of 3 card slots. Besides wanting to know how in XP I might
find out that particular info from a PC with XP in the future, I would like
to know if the cards I may install can be larger than the 256mb in place,
and when I do install them should I also remove the battery from the laptop
to put them in
or is it ok to just have it off at that time? Thanks.
