I think you are thinking of the early HX boards.  For those with a single
32kb X 8kb tag chip then the cacheable range was the first 64Mb of memory.
However you could add another tag ram chip which would increase the
cacheable range to 512Mb of RAM. Many earlier HX boards also used COAST
modules for L2 Cache that were upgradable and came in 256 or 512kb sizes.
Back then 64 Mb of RAM was considered a LOT of RAM.

I remember when I purchased my first HX board ...a Tyan Tomcat I. I ordered
it with a  256K COAST module and 48 megs of EDO. I paid something like 300
to 400 dollars for the RAM !
