  D'oh!

  Since the rest of the new computer (case, speakers, keyboard, bouse, ...)
is black, I removed the beige faceplate of the drive and replaced it with
the alternate black one supplied.  It turns out that the piece that fits on
the end of the drawer doesn't quite perfectly align with the slot in the
main faceplate, so it stops a millimeter or two short of closing all the
way.  The drive detects the obstruction and re-extends the tray.

  I think a permanent solution may involve trimming a little material off
the piece on the end of thr tray, but at least now I understand the symptom.
