My best guess on this one is that you are experiencing the early stages
of a hard drive failure.   I would prepare for a full failure by backing up
all files that cannot be replaced by reinstalling your software apps.   I would
also get the make, model and serial number off the hard drive and visit
the web site for the manufacture to see if it is still covered under warranty.

You can, with many manufacturers, get a fairly quick turn around time when
you send the drive in under warranty.  I recently sent a drive to Seagate
and one to Fujitsu.  I sent the drives in using express 2 day mail.   I had
the Fujitsu back in 5 working days and the Seagate in six.  That is not typical
in my experience...  it usually takes twice that long...  but, I would be prepared
for a drive failure or even go ahead consider it failing now and replace it under
warranty...   that is if it still is under warranty.
