Trevor,

it's a standard amount of memory under W95. Consider that Win95,
like DOS, boots io.sys and msdos.sys and command.com before anything
else. Now, if you remember, the command.com can be loaded entirely
into himem. This leaves io.sys and msdos.sys. Some part of these files
must stay in lower memory, but in DOS6.2 these files are small,
so you can reach 629-635 K of free memory (rare, but not impossible).
My "normal dos size" was 621K (mouse+cd-rom drivers).

But consider the size of io.sys and msdos.sys in Win95. By using
Explorer, you can find out that their size is well over 20K.
Assuming that 20%-50% of this must stay in main memory, you
will receive the average of 530-570K of free memory, which is
correct for most of W95 pc's.

I'll be glad to find that I'm wrong and I can reach 620K under W95...
I'll be able to run some stuff for which I must switch to DOS
currently :)
