I have a COM port problem in Win 98.

I first realized the problem when I could not get any fax software to work.
The PNP modem worked OK but after some checking I discovered that the modem
was installed on COM 2 IRQ 3 but WIN 98 had installed COM 1 and COM 4. Of
course COM 2 and 4 are shared so the modem worked but the FAX software
looks to COM 2..... doesn't find it and hangs. This modem will not let me
put it on COM 4.

The only thing using the COM ports is the modem. I thought it was the PNP
modem so I pulled it ..stuck a none PNP modem on Com 2 IRQ3 in and
restarted....same problem.

I have tried turning off the serial ports in the Bios and starting again.
This is on a well used and very stable FIC PA 2007. The serial ports are
correctly setup. and test out correctly. This FIC has been setup correctly
with 95 and NT and has run fine for a year.

I have troubleshooted my way to the point where I have physically removed
the modem....the sound card....and have manually erased all trace of them
and the com ports from the registry. The mouse is on PS2..there are no
other external devices attached..the only card in the machine is a very
generic Jaton PCI video card....

and yet upon reboot 98 installs COM 3 and 4 instead of the normal 1 and 2.

Unless I can come up with a solution to get 98 to set up COM 1 and 2
normally I may end up having to remove windows and reinstalling.

Any ideas appreciated.

Mark
