This may be a very dumb question, but here goes.

I am in the market for a DVD burner, never having had one before. My
question relates to burning speeds. I want to get a 16X Dual Layer (DL)
burner and most of them seem to do the DL re-write at 2.4X. A few newer
models are now up to 4X.

If I buy a burner that does 2.4X, is an increase in speed to 4X a function
of upgradeable firmware (if and when available) or is this a function of the
burner hardware itself, as in once a 2.4X always 2.4X no matter what
firmware is used?

Can I save some money now on a good 2.4X, but maybe still get the 4X
function later when firmware is upgraded?

Michael
