Hi folks.

I'm trying to enable WEP in my Wifi setup (two Wifi'd
XPPro machines to an access point, then a wired
router/firewall, then cable modem, out to the Net).
Whenever I have no WEP enabled, all my communications,
including my AOL Instant Messaging client, work fine,
but as soon as I turn on WEP, AIM breaks (the rest
stays functional). I presume I need a proxy setting
in AIM for each machine, but this is where I am
stumped, because I don't know what settings to use for
the proxy stuff. I'm running AIM version 4.8 and the
proxy setting fields are as follows:

Host (blank, I presume this needs an IP)
Port (1080 is entered by default, it can be changed)
Protocol (SOCKS4 is default, other options are
SOCKS5, HTTPS, HTTP)

then there are also optional user/pwd authentication
fields.

So which IP do I use for the host -- my access point,
or my router, or my cable modem, or something else
entirely? I just don't have enough experience with
this stuff yet to be clear on this, but I do want to
use WEP if at all possible while still being able to
IM with my pals. For my local LAN, I'm doing DHCP
through the router, so there is no manual entry of any
proxy server stuff in my browser, for instance, to
copy settings from.

I've Googled around but while there is lots of
information about setting up WEP (which as I said I've
been able to do), nothing seems to reference my issues
with the AIM client. And the AIM helpfiles are
useless, quel surprise.

Anyone able to point me in the right direction, or
indicate which settings I should try, to get AIM back
up when WEP is enabled? If I haven't provided enough
information, please ask and I'll email whatever else
is needed.

Many thanks,

Leeeny Lehner
