  In general, I'll second Bob's advice.

  But although I'd consider networking three machines a fun project,
presumably there is some benefit for the business that you're hoping
to relize from this.  Will the machines be sharing files?  printers?
an internet connection (dialup?  cable modem?  xDSL?)? an application
or database?
  Answers to these questions will determine what protocols you need
to install, whether (and how) you need to configure one machine as a
server, and so on.
