Paul,

You can rescue your data. Look on the hard drive for the manufacturer's
data, lacking that, check their web site and/or make a phone call. --
but if we're lucky, you'll use this for comparison only. What OS is it?
Depending on the OS, you'll have options. I'll assume it's an IDE drive.
If it's SCSI, write back to this list for different directions...

You will need to know the jumper setting for master/slave on this drive
-- part of the manufacturer's data. Set the jumper to SLAVE, and attach
it as the second hdd on a machine who's bios auto detects hard disks.
(Watch to line up pin 1(one) on the IDE cable and the power cable.) If
we're lucky, you'll be able to access the drive as you want. If there's
any question that the settings are not correct on the autodetect--you
see in the bios set-up: the number of cylinders, heads, and sectors
agree with the manufactorer's data -- you'll have to enter the correct
data manually. The new computer bios should detect the old drives
partitioning. You can then use etiher windows/dos commands OR; there is
commercial 3rd party software, like drive copy, etc. which will make
this much easier. You can then decide what you want to copy to a new
drive.

Best regards,
Jim Griffin
