I used to ahve similar problems with my Philips CDD3610 and it was down to
cooling.  I now run my PC with the case off (it gets dusty but I air-dust it
every few days) and have had no further 'coasters'!

this cd burner has probably cooked about 240 r type discs -- never used
it for rewritables -- so perhaps it's just worn out.
what it does is hang during a burn. while burning an audio cd, the adaptec
software will say "writing block 378 to disc" or the like and it'll stick
there, and the time countdown will freeze. i've left it that way for
a long period to see if it would recover and it doesn't.
anyway, i can use end task to close the software, but i can't eject the
trashed disk without doing a restart.
the machine has always been extremely reliable.
nothing about the system has changed -- pii 266, 128m ram, same o.s.
and adaptec 3.1.
the problem occurs with different brands of discs.
unfortunately i cannot remember if the same hangup occurred while writing
a data disc -- i believe so, tho.
anyway, has this burner earned a respectful burial in the back yard or
are there other possibilities? could a need for cleaning cause these
hangups (duh, i've never cleaned it)?
i've stuck another burner in there and gotten good burns without a problem
so i'm pretty sure it's not something outside the drive.
