Did it go thru a surface scan at this time? How big a hard drive do you
have? 30 hours seems a long time, but with todays 100+GB hard drives, a
surface scan can run forever.

Sounds like either a bad disk, (dirty, scratched, etc) or a dirty drive.
Look for fingerprints or scratches on the disk, and see if anyone has a
good drive cleaner, (one with a brush on it).

I'm wondering what the difference is between before, when you couldn't get
on the Internet, and now, being able to get on the internet? 56K modem or
broadband connection?? I doubt the very small "partial" restore from the
disk fixed your not being able to get on the Internet problem. Maybe the
restart of Windows did?

Contrary to what many believe believe, Scandisk does not fix software
problems. It just scans the hard drive looking for bad sectors and files
that were not closed in the previous session of Windows. It doesn't replace
files that are missing or corrupt. You may want to use System File Checker
to do that. It has an option to restore files that are missing from the
Windows Installation. Armed with a filename, you can pull those files from
the Windows installation cab files.

Installations of Windows that have seen several years of use often develop
"quirks", which will cause all sorts of weird errors to pop up. If it's
been several years since you've bought the computer and have never used the
restore disk to redo the installation... it is time. The best way is to
backup your data and let the restore program do a complete format and
reinstall... that is, once you figure out your cdrom disk/drive problem. If
it is the disk, you can get a replacement from HP at a small cost.
