Thanks Rick, it does indeed boot if you wait long enough. I haven't tried it
enough times to see if it speeds up as I rarely turn the machine off. I will
probably get a USB2 card at some time as I'm going to be replacing my
printer and may get a photo printer so will want to take advantage of the
increased speed with USB2.

This may or may not work...
(It works with USB memory card readers and other stuff.)

Give it lots of time.  Once it boots (very) slow once or twice,
it seems to find it quicker after that... (Almost normal.)
