Hi Kevin

Here's a possibility to consider before deciding that your drive
has failed.

It's possible that you have reached the limit on number of files
for the *root directory* of a drive. If you have way over a
hundred files [**] in C:\, try moving a number of them to subfolders
and see if your problem goes away. (If I'm right here, you won't
be able to create a new folder until you move some files from
C:\ to an already existing subfolder.) Once you have moved some
files to subfolders, create a new folder and move all non-system
files to that subfolder. Then see if you can run Defrag without
a BSOD.

[**] The number of files allowed in the root directory of any
drive depends on the total number of characters in all the file
names...so I can't give you an exact number.

Regards,
Bill
