Hi again,

Just to let you know, I figured out the answer to my
problem, and wanted to share, especially for Kathleen.

I made a new shortcut for each--Disk Defragmenter and
Disk Cleanup. Here are the steps:

1. From the desktop, right-click in an area of the
screen where there are no icons.
2. Choose New>>Shortcut.
3. First step of the wizard asks for the location of
the file.
   a. Disk Defragmenter is
"%SystemRoot%\System32\dfrg.msc"
   b. Disk Cleanup is
"%SystemRoot%\System32\cleanmgr.exe"
4. After clicking Next, you'll be asked to name the
shortcut. It will also suggest a name, but of course,
you can change this.
5. Click Next, then click Finish.
6. You have a new icon.

(This still does not explain why it is not found on
Search. If anybody has an answer to this, I would be
very interested to hear it.)
