I this *exact* issue-- directly mapping the drives of another machine on my home
LAN worked, but seeing the machine itself in network neighborhood didn't work.
This is not a problem with setting "allow to share files" on, etc., b/c mapping
the drives does work. The problem is with network neighborhood not being able to
resolve the UNC's.

For me, this was a problem with the IP's-- you need to have all the machines in
your LAN in the same 'dotted-triplet' as the gateway, and with each other.

This didn't work:
gateway: 9.9.9.9
subnet: 255.0.0.0
machine1: 1.1.1.1
machine2: 2.2.2.2

-but-
This *did* work:
gateway: 9.9.9.9
subnet: 255.0.0.0
machine1: 9.9.9.1
machine2: 9.9.9.2

For NT, 98, 95, disable WINS, and do use a gateway.

Again, the first example of IP's & gateway *did* allow sharing of drives [albiet
sometimes resolution was slow, esp. on boot], but did *not* work in Network
Neighborhood.

Hope this helps.
