I've had success in the past, when I've intended to remove the HD
interface drivers from Device Manager that control where Windows resides,
to first boot into Safe Mode (so the drivers aren't being used by
Windows) and THEN remove them in Device Manager.  Upon your next boot,
Windows usually notices "new hardware" and installs the correct drivers
(if it or you have them).
