  This actually depends on what components you're working on.

  If you are working on the electronics -- boards and drives -- then
leaving the system plugged in (to a *properly* wired three-prong
socket...) is a convenient way to make sure there is a good ground
handy to drain away any static charges.

  If, on the other hand, you are working on the power supply or switch,
then there's a risk of shorting the 120v AC current to ground.  Learn
from my experience[!]:  simply turning off the switch is not adequate
in this case, you *must* unplug the system from the wall.
