Peter,
This is the direction I was starting to go as well.  I moved my mouse and
keyboard to another machine and I still have the same problems.  Looks like
the mouse is the problem.  This is the second MS wireless I have had -
different problems but same time frame - 2+years.  I think I will invest in
the Logitech brand.

I missed the original post, but thought I'd share my experiences. My first
wireless mouse was a Microsoft model. I then got a second one. Both of these
failed within a year or two. They were still under Microsoft warranty, so I
got replacements, but quickly sold them and got a Logitech model instead.
The Logitech too broke down, but not in the basic mouse operations. The
wheel stopped working. Logitech replaced it under warranty. I have had no
further problems. The Logitech worked much smoother than the Microsoft, but
it should be noted that the Logitech cost almost three times as much!

Didn't help!  Just in case, I tried a 5 year old USB MS optical mouse And
all worked perfectly.

David - You say buy a new mouse - Is there an issue with these wireless
devices?
I have a mouse keyboard set for convenience but if there are issues with how
long these devices last that I am not aware of - I will switch back to wired
to eliminate the hassle and the expense.
