You have gotten very good answers already so I'll just comment on the price
difference.

Perhaps, not neccessarily, building your own will cost you more if you buy
retail, then again the components will be of  higher quality than anything
you can buy off the shelve. There's a lot of corners cut in order to make
brand name computers inexpensive.
