Gary, you've got the dreaded W98 Shutdown bug. This isn't a virus, it's a
glitch, and unfortunately there isn't a simple answer. There's been a HEAP
of posts about this (where are the archive files, anyway? - anyone?)
and the net abounds with fixes.

But I have to say that I've gone through every fix (30+) on some machines
and still didn't solve the problem. The last time I ran across it, it kicked
in before I'd even finished the Windows install so I just started again.

If all else fails, select 'Shutdown to DOS' and just switch off manually.

My daughters computer, a 600meghz Celeron, Win98SE, is up to date on
everything. When you shutdown the computer it would shut it down
completely, through the start, shutdown, shutdown. Now for some reason
when you try to shutdown it stops at a screen that says (it is now safe
to shutdown your computer.) Can anyone help me to put it back the way it
was.
