The reason that you cant run scandisk is because the drives are not
configured or you have lost your partition tables. You say you hear the
drives spin up and that you get the message "invalid drive specification"
that tells me that the drives are up and running and that tells me that the
HD controller is talking to the HDs. so the next step is to make sure that
you have the proper setup in your CMOS/BIOS. Is the date and time correct
on the PC? It could also be that the onboard battery has died. If you have
Norton Utilities you might be able to access the drives with the tools in
the package. I also wonder with a 4gig drive on a 486 what disk manager
software you are using? My first guess here is that you have lost the
partitions on the 1st drive and since that would contain the drive overlay
software to access the second drive you cant see either drive.
