It's been quite a while since my last clean OS install and so I'm due.  I'm running into a strange issue.  I want to fdisk /mbr my drives, reformat and install Win98 clean.  In the past, at one time or another, I've used Boot Magic to help manage dual duty between Linux and Windows on BOTH my C: and D: drives.  Although all Linux partitions are long since deleted from this system and Boot Magic uninstalled, I'm not completely sure my master boot record is in order.

When booting from a Win98 start up disk it seems that my C: drive becomes my D: drive and visa versa.  I further confirm this when looking at the partition information in fdisk after booting from the disk.  (I had planned on runing fdisk /mbr from the start up floppy).  However, the C: is correctly C: and D: is D: when in the Win98 GUI as well as when I run fdisk from the GUI's command line.

I'm a little afriad I don't know enough about the master boot record to continue with my plan.  My data is backed up so I'm not concerned about data loss but I want to be sure I don't mess up the drives beyond repair.

I'm pretty sure my drives are correctly set to Master / Slave but it seems both disks have active partitions (A in fdisk).

Any comments, instructions or MBR explainations would be most welcome.
