A service call may not be a bad idea. Some of the related
battles I have fought with win98 are monitor type reverting
to 'unknown' instead of plug and play, adapter getting stuck
on 'vga compatible' and refresh rate getting stuck on 'default'
instead of 'optimal'. Go into Display Properties, Advanced
and check the refresh, adapter, and monitor. If any are not set
to the correct hardware for your pc, the symptoms you describe
can occur. I have had to resort to a complete win98 re-install
to clear tangled settings.

By the way, this is the very reason video driver
install instructions warn you to set your adapter to vga compatible
before changing video adapters, although that's not how yours
got confused. It can be very irritating.

Thanks, but I've already tried "apply". This color problem happened after
my daughter was on the computer and accidently put the computer in DOS. I
was not here to help her and before it was over she had put the computer in
safe mode. When I got to the computer I brought everything back, but my
color was messed up. I figure she got into something else and somehow got
everything off. We've checked the monitor, the cords, video driver, device
manager, etc. We are totally stumped and almost ready to call a service
man.
