because i had a SOMEWHAT similar problem ( it was a hp notebook though...and had trouble inputting through keyboard only on specific occassions)i am posting this but not sure how far it will help in your case.

ASSUMING you are using HP multimedia keyboard that came with the system then there is a possibility that you may need some drivers/configuration of the keyboard.
