Thanks for the advice.  The External HD is still not showing up in the
device manager.  It is an old (old by computer standards) MicroTek 500M
external drive.  I am using an adaptec SCSI card.  (I'm writing from work so
I don't have all the details).  The external drive is terminated.  The SCSI
ID is 4 or 5.  The terminator was NOT from the manufacturer, but one I
picked up locally.  I have yet to change the cables too.

        SCSI devices need termination properly. You may need a terminator on
your
        external drive, you should get the termination info from the HD
company. Please
        also check the drive's SCSI ID, the SCSI card should take 7, the
drive cannot
        use same number.
