Yes Mick...  as far as I know...  you are right and he is quite misinformed.

The blank CD does not matter.  It is just a disc and all writers use the
same blanks.   There are some special schemes for writing to discs
that are non-standard...  but, they are related to the software and
the code that is burned onto the disc.   There are re-writable CDs
and that is different...  they can be used over and over like a floppy
disk and require a rewritable CD rom to preform this function.  There
are DVD drives and soon to be DVD writers....   but, those are
the only three formats related to this type of recording.

He maybe confused based on a special software package he is using
or some salesman has got ahold of him, convinced him wrongly only
to sell him blank CDs for $10 a piece...  (I currently buy them for 85¢).
