George,
Conventional wisdom and plenty of real life experiences point to the Celeron
300A and either the Abit BX6 or BH6.  Both these boards use allow software
voltage and bus speed adjustments which dispenses with fiddling with jumpers
and dip switches.  Also Abit has a new Slot 1 board -- the BX6-R2 which
essentially is the best of the BX & BH6, for around US$20 more than the BH6,
if you shop around.  One caveat is that the 300A is getting as rare as ducks
lips, so if you find a vendor with stock check the date of manufacture and
place of assembly or pay slightly more for one pre-tested and guaranteed to
run stable at 540 or 464 MHz.

IIRC Bill Cohane had an excellent dissertation about overclocking this
combination on the Nospin site.  Start there and post back if you have more
questions.

BTW, I've heard the new Celeron 333 can run 515MHz on the BX6R2 but be aware
this is a *real* crap shoot and the odds are against this, 1 in 10, unless
you are *really* lucky.
