Marv:
I've done this successfully several times using retail box Maxtor drives. 
Maxtor includes a floppy containing their MaxBlast program that will move 
your current Windows installation (including applications) to the new drive; 
it even handles the partitioning and formatting for you. You can also 
download Maxblast from the Maxtor website. I expect that the other drive 
manufacturers offer a similar service.
