I will take a crack at this:
Have you used a voltmeter on the powersupply to insure that the voltage
levels are what they are supposed to be? Have you disabled the boot virus
protection? That can hose an installation. Perhaps there was damage to the
cpu during installation of the heatsink-fan? We all know how delicate AMD
chips are.

The stack overflow error may indicate the possibility that the config.sys
startup file is not configured right for the installation. Maybe double
checking startup file values; stacks, files, and buffers. I'm not sure about
the values off hand, you may want to check a reference for this. I'll dig
out my Bigelow's and see if it's in there a bit later.
