Actually switching power supplies are very efficient, far more than a
linear power supply. That is main reason they are so popular, as
the efficency leads to smaller size, less cooling requirements,etc.
From being popular we get the lower price due to mass production
of them. They can be hard to troubleshoot and difficult to
understand at times, that is for sure. Thier output voltages/spikes
etc. usually fall well within specs, unless they are defective !!!
