CD-Rom doesn't detect new disks

My CD-Rom doesn't automatically refresh itself when I insert a new disk.
The icon showing for the CD is always whatever was there when I booted.  I
can open the new cd and run programs etc from it, but it won't see the new
icon or auto-run.
Any ideas on how to solve this?
