Many XP machines won't respond to ping if the XP firewall is enabled. In
90% or more of cases I've seen or heard of, "A can ping B, but B can't ping
A" has turned out to be due to a firewall filtering out ping requests or
ping responses.

To use NetBEUI, it would have to be installed and enabled on both
machines. I generally recommend against it, even for tiny networks like
this. It *can* allow some network functions to "work" even though there are
still problems on the TCP/IP side, but it will tend to make troubleshooting
the remaining problems more difficult.

Hidden away under the folder options in XP's version of Windows Explorer
is a checkbos for "Simple File Sharing", which I believe is enabled by
default. I'm not sure how that's supposed to work, but I suspect it only
functions properly in workgroups that are 100% XP/2003. Locate this
checkbox on the XP machine and make sure it is not checked.
