Hi everyone
I attempted to install an Astra 2000U USB scanner into a new Gateway system
and it will not operate. When I first cold start the computer, the
scanner lights up and goes through its warm-up. Then I run the scanner test
and it senses
the scanner and displays the scanner and driver information but when I click
on test
scan it begins moving the light bar a small amount (less than an inch) and
then stops and gives an error code of 00000000h. When I start VistaScan32
version 3.51 and click on Preview a window appears and indicates it is
warming up and next the light bar moves slightly and then stops suddenly
with the
same error code. There is no mention of a scanning lock in the installation
instructions and I cannot find one on the scanner. I have uninstalled and
reinstalled the software. I have
downloaded and installed the latest drivers from the UMAX web site. I have
searched the UMAX, Gateway, and Microsoft sites and found no mention of this
problem.
The device manager in system properties shows the scanner to be operating
correctly. I have tried both USB ports with no luck. No other USB
devices are connected. System Information shows that the USB Universal Host
Controller,
the USR 56K Voice Win modem, and the IRQ holder for PCI steering are all on
IRQ 9 and IRQs 3 and 5 are free. It was suggested that there might be an IRQ
conflict so I attempted to switch first the modem and then the USB
controller to one of the free IRQs but Windows tells me that they can't be
switched. The modem is an internal model that came with the system.

I have sent two messages to the UMAX support since last
Saturday but have had no response. Several of these computer systems were
purchased
by my school district for use by faculty members and none of the scanners
will function correctly on any of the systems.

System information:
Scanner: UMAX Astra 2000U
Computer Model: New Gateway E-4200 system
USB host controller INTEL 82371 AB/EB
CPU: Pentium II 400
OS: Windows 98 SE
96 MB RAM
Printer: Epson Stylus 850Ne
Modem: Internal U.S. Robotics 56K Voice Win

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated as we will have to return all of
these scanners if they won't install properly.
