Thanks for your reply.  Although I'm not averse to poking around the drive I called Tecmar and got an RMA to return the unit for replacement.
the unit went out today and I should have a new one at no cost (other than that of shipping the old one) within 10-15 days.
I'm extremely pleased with their service.
