  Let's see, 40C == 104F.  The temperature alarm units on our servers come
preset to produce an alarm tone at 110F and attempt to shut off the power at
118F (113F = 45C).  So I would say that this is pretty normal.

  Running without the case will help keep the *general* temperature inside
the case -- away from components -- down, but may reduce the effectiveness of
fans etc that are intended to carry heat away from components.
  I have actually done this a fair bit, and have never personally had a
problem traced to it, but I do not recommend it, especially in a dusty area.
