Michael,
There is a program on the Windows diskette called poledit.exe (System Policy
Editor). I don't recall where on the CD-ROM it is located, but I'm sure
that you can find it with Windows Explorer.

Open the Control Panel and run "Users".

Create a "Student" profile and a "Admin" profile. You, as admin, should
give yourself access to everything, with a password that only you know.
Set the "Student" profile password to something that the students call
all remember.

Reboot after this, go into BIOS Setup and make sure that the diskette drive
is active.
(The users activities will be restricted within the settings in the Policy
Editor).

Continue with the Windows boot-up and log on with the new profile "Admin."

Install "poledit.exe" from the Windows CD.

Open the Policy Editor and under File on the menu, choose "Open Registry".

D-click on "Local Computer" and confirm that:
        /Local Computer/Windows 9x Network/Access Control/User-level
                access control/ is checked.

        Also confirm that:
        /Windows 9x System/User Profiles/Enable User Profiles/ is checked.

Click OK and D-click on "Local User". Checkmark the following:
I have not tried all of these, so lets proceed carefully -
Do the first one listed below, click OK, close Windows and reboot.
/To keep students from changing the desktop around, you can
                check /Windows 9x System/Shell/Restrictions/
                Don't save settings at exit

Log in under Admin and make some obvious changes to the desktop, like
install another shortcut to some program. Exit Windows and reboot. Log
in as Admin again, and make sure that the new shortcut IS STILL THERE.
YOU DON'T WANT TO SHOOT YOURSELF IN THE FOOT BY RESTRICTING ADMIN.
If all is OK, then:
        /Windows 9x System/Shell/Restrictions/Remove folders from
                'Settings' on Start Menu/

        /Windows 9x System/Control Panel/System/Restrict System Control Panel/

        /Windows 9x System/Control Panel/Passwords/Restrict Passwords Control
                Panel/

Let us know if this meets your needs. :>)

Subject: [PCBUILD] Disable A:\ ?

Dear Friends,

Does anyone have a good idea how to disable the A:\ drive
temporarily, to prevent students using diskettes?

If I disable the drive in the Bios, My Computer tries to find it and is
unhappy. I can disable it in Device Manager, but anyone can
activate it. Can I password protect the Device Manager?
I don't want to open the case each time and disconnect it.

ideas?

many TIA,

Michael Beechey, a Canuck in Sucre, Bolivia
