Hi Jerry,
I have one of these printers and just love it, especially since it has
individual ink cartridges.  Will it let you try using the Canon "toolbox"
(Windows Print System - I think) and do a print head cleaning?  If
you've tried that, does it still give you the same message?

I found sometimes that when I put a new cartridge in that I have
to go in and tell it to do a cleaning.  This seems to help
initialize it and start things flowing.

You may want to look around at printer prices before deciding to
get another print head.  A lot of printers are reasonably priced.
